Eat healthy, live healthy: Introduction and Basics

Aloha lovely readers!!

So today I want to try something new… In addition to blogging about fashion and makeup, I will also start writing about health!

I have two good reasons for this.

First of all, I want to teach you how to stay healthy until the very last second of your life! Chronic diseases are increasing significantly… :( Let’s stop this together!
It’s not all about our genes; lifestyle is one of the most important factors to a long and healthy life! For example: bowel cancer is a type of cancer that is seen a lot in America. Obesity and bad eating habits are big risk factors. On the other hand, bowel cancer is not so common in Japan, especially because of better food choices. But if someone from Japan immigrates to the United States and adjusts to a western lifestyle, his or her risk of getting bowel cancer is the same as that of an American citizen… So no ‘super’ genes are involved here!
You’ll be surprised how many good things Mother Nature has to offer so you won’t get a life threatening disease… I promise to give you a lot of information about types of food that will decrease the risk of getting cancer, Alzheimer or even cardiovascular diseases!
Obesity, caused by the oversupply of calories, creates a perfect environment for inflammation, oxidants and a lack of defense mechanisms. It disturbs our precious internal environment! Cancer, diabetes, heart disease,… are all a result of this misbalance.

Secondly, I’ve noticed that a lot of girls are often really insecure about their bodies. I think it’s so sad that these beautiful girls go on ‘crash diets’, only drink soup, eat about 300 calories and other crazy stuff like that… Being healthy should be fun and certainly not a punishment! I want everyone to be happy!

Our new motto is: Eat healthy, live healthy!

Notice that I won’t give lots of references… most of these facts are found in my ‘personal knowledge library’. As you might know, I’m almost a biomedical sciences bachelor and that’s why I am interested in living a healthy lifestyle! ;)

So here are the biggest secrets:

DON’T GO ON A DIET! Diets suck! And losing weight fast is not the correct path to choose!!
All you need to do is eat CLEAN. What is clean? Clean means eating good things; stuff your body really needs to function! So eliminate processed foods and give whole foods a go, try to eat a great variety of natural and healthy products, avoid the ‘bad’ fats (saturated fat) and choose mono- or polyunsaturated fats, avoid processed sugars and so on.

http://9gag.com

You should NEVER go beneath your daily calorie intake! Diets often make you hungry and moody because you eat to few calories to function… never eat less than your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), this is the bare minimum!! Basal metabolic rate = the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day and did nothing. (Email me if you want to know your personal BMR!)

And I insist: you must add calories on top of that BMR when you exercise! I will personally come and give you a serious wakeup call, if you ever consider this thought: ‘Well, I’ve just finished my fitness routine! I will not eat, or else all the extra calories will make me fat again…’ NO! EAT!
Let’s put it this way: If you do not increase your intake, you will lose weight. But it will probably be muscle loss, not fat loss… (It’s as ridiculous as losing an arm…)
So please, always eat enough! You will lose more fat when you live an active life and eat what your body needs! :D

Another don’t: NEVER skip meals! Again, eating is necessary! You can try to eat 6 smaller meals throughout the day, so you won’t be extremely hungry when you can finally eat diner…  and it will help you to make better portion decisions!  Also eat slow, it takes approximately 20 minutes for the stomach to send signals to the brain that you’re full and should stop.
We all know that when you’re extremely hungry you pile up a lot of food, you eat it to fast and a few minutes later you’re sick, bloated or feeling guilty…
Another trick for avoiding a binge attack: don’t eat empty calories! 100 calories of walnuts is a better choice than 100 calories of Oreos… Something nutritional will keep you full for a long time and will also help you to practice portion control!

Don’t smoke! I can write thousands of blogs about this one golden rule…

And now one of the most important rules: drink at least 8 glasses of water a day!
It will give you a flat belly because it flushes away bad toxins and well… your whole body needs water! It’s necessary for every single cell in your precious body! :D Plus, your brain really cries for water while studying! ;)

Sleep is important too! Try having a good 7 hours of sleep everyday.

Now, the part that many people hate… 80% of fat loss is accomplished by eating clean! On the other hand, 20% is done by exercise!!! So, do your cardio and afterwards grab some weights to make your workout complete!

Well, this is A LOT of information! Here’s a recap:
1.    Eat!
2.    Plan 5-6 meals (eat every 2-3 hours)
3.    Practice portion control
4.    Limit packaged and processed foods
5.    Prepare clean snacks to combat cravings
6.    Limit alcohol, added sugars, bad fats and white carbs
7.    Drink 2-3 litres of water
8.    Exercise 3-5 days per week and move 30min everyday
9.    Eat before and after a workout
10.  Sleep at least 7 hours every night

Still not convinced? I’ve learned that following these rules will reduce the risk of getting diabetes with about 90%, heart disease with about 80% and cancer with about 70%. So follow these lifesaving rules!!!

My goal is, in the first place, to make you and the people you love healthy. I want to teach you how to make good food choices, how to keep on moving and how to love your body! Every body type is beautiful and it’s not my intention to promote the ‘photoshopped cover girl’ look. Health and wellbeing is MUCH more important!
